James SMALE - (1869 - 1951)

The author's grandmother, Phyllis Grace GEAKE, nee WEAVER, (1916 - 2005), remembered James SMALE. She knew him as 'Uncle Jim', though in actual fact, he would have been her great-uncle as he was her grandfather's brother (ie. William Henry SMALE and James SMALE were brothers).

When Phyllis was living with her grandparents (sadly she was orphaned by the age of 4) she remembered 'Uncle Jim' being the groundsman at Tavistock Bowling Green. She said that he used to come over every Sunday as it wasn't far from the bowling green (she was probably referring to 22 Ford Street, Tavistock - Phyllis was born there but it was the home of her grandparents). This would have been between 1921 and 1925 as after that, Phyllis went to live with an aunt as her grandmother, Grace SMALE (nee MARTIN), died when Phyllis was 9.

Phyllis said that 'Uncle Jim' used to have his legs in bandages all the time and she knew that side of the family had originated from North Devon.
