Charles Tidmarsh DANDO - (1814 - 1889)

Charles Tidmarsh DANDO was born in Bristol in 1814, the youngest son of Joseph DANDO and Ann (nee MURCH). He was baptized at the Penn Street Calvinistic Methodist Tabernacle, Bristol, Gloucestershire, on 6th July 1816.

In 1837, Charles married Clarissa SPIERS, the daughter of a wealthy silk manufacturer, and the Bristol Mercury published the details of the marriage on Saturday, June 24, 1837; Issue 2470...

Charles followed his father into the hat manufacturing business and by 1841, he and Clarissa had moved into Portland Square, Bristol; number 13 to be precise. At the same time, his father, Joseph DANDO the elder, with a number of Charles' siblings, was living at number 26. Here are the census details for Charles' household...

At some stage, Charles went into partnership with his brother Joseph DANDO, the younger. The partnership was dissolved in 1851 and the London Gazette published the following notice on 21st March of that year...

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership lately subsisting between the undersigned, Joseph Dando and Charles Tidmarsh Dando, of the city of Bristol, Hat Manufacturers, was, on the 31st day of December last, dissolved by mutual consent; and that all debts owing to the said partnership will be received, and all debts owing therefrom, will be paid by the said Joseph Dando. -Dated the 14th day of February 1851.

The 1861 census shows Charles and Clarissa were still at Portland Square, specifically No. 26. Presumably they moved in after Charles' father, Joseph, moved to Ashley Down. Charles was 46 years old and had already retired. They had two surviving children, Charles Joseph and Clarissa Emmeline. The census details are as follows...

The following article appeared in the London Gazette on 22nd December 1871...

PURSUANT to an Order of the High Court of Chancery, made in the matter of the trusts of the settlement, dated the 24th day of June, 1846, and made between Joseph Dando the elder, of the first part; Joseph Dando the younger and Harriet Dando, his wife, of the second part; and the said Joseph Dando and Charles Tidmarsh Dando, of the third part; and in the matter of the Act 10th and 11th Victoria, c. 96, intituled "An Act for the better securing of Trustees." All persons claiming to be the children, or issue of children who have died, of Joseph Dando the younger, formerly of Bristol, in the county of Gloucester, afterwards of Dublin, in Ireland, afterwards of New York, and then of Philadelphia, in the United States of America, and afterwards of Belfast, in Ireland, are by their Solicitors, on or before the 7th day of March, 1872, to come in and prove their claims, at the chambers of the 'Vice-Chancellor Sir John Wickens, No. 12, Old-square, Lincoln's-inn, London, or in default thereof they will be peremptorily excluded from the benefit of the said Order. Thursday, the 21st day of March, 1872, at one of the clock in the afternoon, at the said chambers, is appointed for hearing and adjudicating upon tbe said claims - Dated this 8th day of December, 1871.
NOTE - The said Joseph Dando the younger is believed to have contracted marriages as follows :- In the year 1830 or 1831, to one Ellen Stirling or Sheriff, and to have been divorced from her in New York. In Philadelphia to one Jane Clark, and, after her death, to one Sarah Clark. In Philadelphia to one Harriet Catherine Williams. Any information respecting these marriages, and the issue of them, may be sent to Messrs. Meynell and Pemberton, of No. 20, Whitehall place, London, England.

Charles wrote his will in 1886. The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post printed the following notice in 1890, a few months after his death...

The will of the late Mr Charles Tidmarsh Dando, of Chatsworth house, Tyndall's park, has been proved in the Bristol District Registry Office by the executors therein named - Mrs Ann Dando (widow) and Mr Henry Carey Houston, of Frome (son-in-law). It is dated the 6th of May, 1886. The gross value of the personal property is £21,235 15s 9d; the net value being £21,069 9s 11d; and the will is sworn under £21,100. The testator bequeaths his house, household furniture, plate. &c., to Mrs Dando, and a sum of £2000 for her own use. The real and personal estate is to be realised, and the money so obtained invested in trust, the income arising therefrom to be paid to Mrs Dando, and at her death the property is to be divided amongst Mr Dando's children in accordance with the provisions of the will. There are a large number of bequests to relatives and personal friends, and also to servants. The following legacies are left to local institutions:- The Children's Hospital, £500; the Bristol Auxiliary of the London Missionary Society, £500; £200 each to the General Hospital, the Royal Infirmary, the Bristol City Mission, the Bristol Auxiliary to the Religious Tract Society, the Bristol Auxiliary to the British and Foreign Bible Society, and the Bristol Female Misericordia Society, and £50 to the Clifton Dispensary.
